Galaxy Forum Japan 2014 – Tokyo

Galaxy Forum returns to the Land of the Rising Sun, one of the world’s 6 major space faring powers, Japan. ILOA collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan NAOJ, to advance Galaxy 21st Century Education continues this year at the Cosmos Building kindly provided by NAOJ at the Mitaka Campus.
The Feature presenter is Astronaut Naoko Yamazaki,
Yamazaki was selected as an astronaut candidate in February 1999, attended the ISS Astronaut Basic Training program beginning in April 1999, and was certified as an astronaut in September 2001. Yamazaki-san has participated in ISS Advanced Training and supported the hardware development and operation of the Japanese Experiment Module. In May 2004, Yamazaki completed Soyuz-TMA Flight Engineer training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Center in Star City, Russia. In June 2004, Yamazaki arrived at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas to begin Astronaut Candidate Training school. In November 2008, JAXA announced that Yamazaki would become the second Japanese woman to fly in space on STS-131, scheduled to launch in 2010. On April 5, 2010 Yamazaki entered space on the shuttle Discovery as part of mission STS-131. She returned to Earth on April 20, 2010. Yamazaki retired from JAXA on August 31, 2011.

Galaxy Forum Hawaii – Waimea 2014 will be held at Anna Ranch in Kamuela on Wednesday, November 19 from 4:30-6:30pm. Along with the presentations by the local teacher and student, the Forum will include extensive updates on astronomy and astronautical research and educational activities underway on island, including a presentation on the 4 Moon Missions of the ILOA and its plan to build a global headquarters and education / research center in Waimea. Educators will receive a Certificate of Participation as well as 21st Century Galaxy education resources – such as the ILOA Galaxy Map 2014. They will also have the opportunity to arrange for an ILOA guest lecture / technology demonstration for their class.
We will be sending you a formal invitation to the Galaxy Forum in the next month. Galaxy Forum New York 2014 – Scarsdale

ILOA will again help host the community of Scarsdale High School students, teachers, administrators and alums in the 1960, 1961 and 1962 Classes — at the 4th annual Galaxy Forum SHS.
The program features a science talk by Dr. Alan Stern on the New Horizons mission currently traveling at 14.72 km/s almost 3.9 Billion kilometers from Earth on its way to explore Pluto and its moons. The mission, is expected to arrive July 14, 2015, will help us understand the icy worlds at the edge of our solar system. Scientists hope to find answers to basic questions about the surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres on these bodies. The mission will then visit one or more Kuiper Belt Objects beyond Pluto.
Galaxy Forums public events with presentations, panel discussions and attendee participation. Efforts are made to integrate local cultures, perspectives, and traditional knowledge. Galaxy Forums have been held in Hawaii, Silicon Valley, Canada, China, India, Southeast Asia, Japan, Europe, Africa, Chile, Brazil, Kansas and New York. Steve Durst organized Galaxy Forum Scarsdale to bring this innovative 21st Century Education to his alma mater.
Steve Durst celebrated his 50th SHS 1961 Class Reunion with the 1st Galaxy Forum at SHS on September 23 2011. The 50th SHS 1962 Reunion starting October 5, 2012, continued the Galaxy Forum SHS program with Jeff Hoffman, 5-time Shuttle Astronaut and SHS 1962 alum, sharing his experience repairing the Hubble Space Telescope. Galaxy Forum SHS 2013 featured Dr. Denton Ebel, Curator / Chair of the Dept of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC speaking on Asteroids in matters of Science, Resources and Security.

ILOA is expanding to “the City”, bringing Galaxy consciousness, awareness and understanding to one of the brightest cities on Earth, one where stars in the night sky are almost forgotten like long lost friends. This innovative program will explore new trajectories of 21st Century Galaxy Education and Exploration through multimedia experiences of art and architecture, light, sound and movement — as well as more traditional presentations on leading edge space enterprise.

Galaxy Forum Canada 2014 – Toronto

Galaxy Forum Canada 2014, with the theme “Moon South Pole and Human Missions: Giant Steps into the Galaxy” is being held in conjunction with the 65th International Astronautical Congress at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Ontario, Canada. Galaxy Forum Kansas 2014 – Hutchinson

The theme of Galaxy Forum Kansas this year is “The Moon, Mars and Journeying to the Stars.” This is the 5th straight Galaxy Forum in Hutchinson, a program that has engaged hundreds of local teachers and accelerated the development of the Ad Astra Kansas Foundation. Founded in 2001 and an affiliate of the Kansas Space Grant Consortium since 2003, AAK Foundation is an information resource focusing on high-tech and space research in the state of Kansas with a mission to advance the Kansas State Motto, “Ad Astra Per Aspera” for the benefit of Kansas, America and the World.
